Treating Multiple Recurrence in C. Difficile Infection

May 31, 2018 [MD Magazine] A recently released Peer Exchange video discusses treating patients with multiple C. diff recurrences. Dr. Darrell S. Pardi of the Mayo Clinic discusses the mechanism of fecal microbiota transplants, “This (FMT) restores the normal microbiome and so-called colonization resistance so that if a C. diff germinates, it has no place to infect.” Dr. Yoav Golan discusses why he uses bezlotoxumab with vancomycin or fidaxomicin before moving to FMT and how using bezlotoxumab in patients who are high risk for C. diff (including patients who have had previous episodes of C. diff) offers a substantial reduction in recurrence.
